Duxford airfield is situated eight miles, as the crow flies, to the south west of the city of Cambridge and about a mile to the west of the village of Duxford from which it derived its name. As was standard practice at the time, the site straddles a main road, in this case the A505 Royston to Newmarket route. The original layout consisted of 15 acres to the north of the road for what was eventually to become the domestic area with barracks and married quarters etc and 223 acres south of the road for the hangars and workshops and the main airfield
